LIKE SEEING AN OLD FRIEND SMILE AGAIN.
Being a lovely old building in a great place isn’t enough without continuing care and attention. The Seven Stars in Penryn was a Grade 2 listed pub which told a story, but – tired and run down – it needed a transformative, life-saving shot in the arm. Our aim from the outset was to bring a glow back to the cheeks of a traditional pub with rooms in a way which chimed with the old building’s essence and location.
We majored on warmth in the colour palette, tradition in the panelling and careful choices in the quirky pieces and the found furniture we restored. There was still scope for heritage colours to encompass the contemporary, just as the original stonework we retained blended beautifully with rich old wood and interesting textures and materials throughout. Historic pubs often scrub up well, but we wanted this one to transcend vanilla, so we gave it back personality, depth and real style.
The tightness of the budget and the smallness of the rooms were significant challenges, but our clients were thrilled and our work exceeded their expectations. They say: “ … Helen, Zella and the team make the whole process very simple and seamless, always available to chat through ideas or challenges as they arise. We have had different budgets available and the team have always managed to stay within it … We intend to continue using Absolute and recommend them any chance we get!”
